Rhythms of Thanksgiving

In Colossians 3:12-17, the apostle Paul puts thanksgiving forward, not once but twice, as an integral part of the community ethic of unity and love that he calls the new people of God to:

15 Let the peace of Christ be in control in your heart (for you were in fact called as one body to this peace), and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace in your hearts to God.

Verse 15: “…and be thankful.” The Greek word for thankful (eucharistoi) is derived from the word most often translated as “grace” or “favor” (charis).

Verse 16: “… with grace in your hearts to God.” The Greek word for “with grace” (en chariti) shares the same root as “grace” (charis) and is often translated as “thankfulness.”

While Paul was writing to Christian households and the church, I believe this same ethic of thankfulness is vitally important for our leadership teams. It is a visible and tangible extension of God’s grace to our individual staff members, teams, clients, donors, and other stakeholders. The organizational principle of appreciative inquiry suggests that we grow in the direction of the kind of questions we are asking. If our questions are appreciative in nature, we will grow in that direction. So, leadership cultures of thanksgiving are redemptive of our missions and honor our people, who are made in God’s image.

Thanksgiving is more than seasonal sentiment! It’s a spiritual and strategic posture. When leaders practice gratitude together, they:

  • Shift from scarcity to abundance: Naming what’s good helps teams see possibility, not just pressure.
  • Strengthen relational trust: Expressing appreciation builds connection, humility, and mutual respect.
  • Re-center on purpose: Gratitude reminds teams why they serve, anchoring them in mission rather than metrics.
  • Invite God’s presence: In Scripture, thanksgiving is a gateway to communion with God (Psalm 100:4), aligning teams with divine delight and direction.

In short, thanksgiving cultivates joy, clarity, and resilience, especially in seasons of complexity or fatigue. On a team, thanksgiving produces…

  • Emotional renewal: Gratitude softens cynicism and reawakens hope.
  • Cultural alignment: Teams that give thanks together tend to listen better, celebrate more, and lead with grace.
  • Missional overflow: Like Psalm 67, thanksgiving isn’t self-contained—it flows outward, blessing others through generosity, creativity, and shared purpose.

Here are a few simple but powerful ways to embed thanksgiving into your team rhythm:

  • Gratitude Circle
    • Invite each team member to name one thing they’re grateful for in the team or mission.
    • Keep it brief, heartfelt, and inclusive.
  • Blessing Inventory
    • Reflect together on how God has shown favor this year through provision, growth, healing, or unexpected grace.
    • Use Psalm 67 as a liturgical frame: “May God be gracious to us… that his ways may be known.”
  • Thanksgiving Letters
    • Encourage team members to write short notes of appreciation to one another.
    • These can be handwritten, emailed, or shared aloud in a meeting.
  • Communal Prayer of Thanks
    • Close a meeting with a prayer that names specific blessings and asks for God’s delight to flow outward into your work and relationships.
  • Eden Reflection
    • Revisit Genesis 2 and Psalm 67 together: What does it mean for your team to be “placed” in a garden of delight, not just duty? How might your shared joy water the wider world?
